SUMMARY:Welstead Camp #3 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:James C. Welstead Camp #3 of the Sons of Union Veterans will meet informally on Monday night\, Sept. 17\, in the fellowship hall at Nye Square. We will have a social time at 5:30 p.m. with the meeting beginning about 6:15 p.m. \nThis will be an informal meeting to attend to normal business and make plans for events of the Fall season\, including free presentations open to the public in November and December. \nBrother Steve will discuss his recent visit to Gettysburg National Battlefield and a proposal to build a shopping center on the edge of this historic property. Speaking of history\, it’s the anniversary of the Battle of Antietam\, and Brother Paul will discuss how that long ago Union victory changed the course of the war — and so continues to impact America today.

SUMMARY:Patriotic Music Then and Now Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Patriotic Music Then and Now: America’s Songs Salute Our Veterans \nOn Monday night\, July 2\, historian David Wells of Ralston will explore musical tributes to veterans throughout U.S. history. \nHis “Patriotic Music Then and Now: America’s Songs Salute Our Veterans” is a free presentation. It begins at 7 p.m. at the Nye Square retirement community\, 655 West 23rd Street (U.S. Highway 30) in Fremont. \nHe will share recordings of music spanning more than 125 years. Wells says the musical styles and lyrics of those songs reflect attitudes prevailing when they were composed\, although their messages about patriotism\, love of country and how we receive those who answer the call to serve are timeless. \nWells is a board member of the Civil War Veterans Museum at the Grand Army of the Republic Hall in Nebraska City. He also produced “Memories of the Boys in Blue\,” a collection of songs and poetry to honor soldiers and sailors from the American Civil War. Artists on that CD brought history to life by performing songs from original sheet music. \nThe free program on July 2 is part of a series of presentations sponsored throughout the year by James C. Welstead Camp No. 3 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War\, which is based in Fremont. To learn more about this organization or upcoming presentations\, contact Camp Commander Paul Hadley at 402-438-6015.

SUMMARY:G.A.R. Observance of Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Grand Army of the Republic Observance of Memorial Day – 150th Anniversary \nMemorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan\, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic\, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May\, 1868\, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers\, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion\, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city\, village and hamlet churchyard in the land\,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day\, as he called it\, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.
