From recruiting and financial and emotional support on the home front — to actual wartime service — how did this earlier generation of veterans help the cause of America’s doughboys? This program will feature photos of Civil War veterans and families who supported our “Doughboys” in World War. Did you know that several Union and Confederate vets were still in the U.S. Army in 1917? Learn more about relationships between the soldiers who went “over there” and their parents and grandparents still in the States. \nIn the Conference Room of the Nye Square Retirement Village

SUMMARY:G.A.R. Observance of Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan\, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic\, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May\, 1868\, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers\, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion\, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city\, village and hamlet churchyard in the land\,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day\, as he called it\, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Statehood Day - Flag Raising
DESCRIPTION:Nebraska Statehood Day – Celebrating 150 Years \nThe Department of Nebraska Sons of Union Veterans (in period uniform) will hoist the colors (37-star flag) on a newly-installed flag pole at the Thomas P. Kennard State Historic Site to open the ceremonies for Nebraska Statehood Day. The house will be open to the public for tours\, free of charge\, until 4  p.m. \nThe house built by Nebraska’s first secretary of state\, Thomas Kennard\, was constructed in 1869 at a time when Lincoln was the fledgling capital of the first state to join the Union after the Civil War. It was designated the Nebraska Statehood Memorial in 1967 in honor of the state’s centennial. For the last fifty years the house has been administered by the Nebraska State Historical Society and interprets both the statehood story and Victorian life on the prairie.
