Coleman\, the Last Union Civil War Soldier buried in York County\, Nebraska. The ceremony will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in York. \nWilliam H. Coleman was a Private in Co. E\, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry and died July 22\, 1941 at the age of 97. \n  \nDirections: Greenwood Cemetery is located at 1000 W 8th St\, York\, NE. \nThe Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War\, Dept. of Nebraska have started the final phase in our Last Soldier Project. The purpose of the project is to locate and appropriately mark the final resting place of the last Union Civil War Soldier buried in each county in the state of Nebraska. SUMMARY:G.A.R. Observance of Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Grand Army of the Republic Observance of Memorial Day – 153rd Anniversary \nMemorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan\, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic\, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May\, 1868\, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers\, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion\, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city\, village and hamlet churchyard in the land\,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day\, as he called it\, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

The memorial service in conjunction with the DUVCW will begin at 9:15 am with the business meeting beginning at 10:00 am. This year’s Department Encampment features a visit from SUVCW National Commander-in-Chief Brian Pierson of Shawnee\, Oklahoma. \nDescendants and history buffs are invited to a free presentation at 1 p.m. at the Saunders County Historical Society Museum at 240 North Walnut St. Historian Jeff Barnes will present “Protecting the Ports: Civil War Fortifications of Charleston and Savannah.” April 12 marks the 160th anniversary of the firing on Fort Sumter and the beginning of the American Civil War. \nBarnes is the author of “Forts of the Northern Plains\,” Great Plains Guide to Custer\,” Great Plains Guide to Buffalo Bill” and “150 to 150: Nebraska’s Landmark Buildings.” \nFor information about the SUVCW and the Encampment\, contact Department Commander John Surman at 402-781-2242. \nTo learn how you can enjoy Barnes’ presentation in person or online\, contact the Saunders County Historical Society at 402-443-3090. DESCRIPTION:The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War\, Department of Nebraska are having a grave dedication honoring Henry Wolf\, the Last Union Civil War Soldier buried in Richardson County\, Nebraska at the Stella Cemetery near Stella. Wolf was a soldier in Co. C\, 47th Pennsylvania Infantry and died March 21\, 1937 at the age of 95. \nDirections: Go south out of Auburn on Hwy 75 about 14 miles to Hwy 63 and turn left.  Stella is about 5 miles or so.  From the west there are 2 school crossing diamond shaped signs with the second one (east one) with a light mounted on top of it but it should not be blinking (there is also a vintage gas station on the southeast corner of the intersection with one non-usable pump in front of it).  Turn south\, right.  You are on Main Street but I do not think it is marked on that highway corner but is as you move south into town.  Proceed through the old “downtown” area.  As you approach the railroad tracks the street will turn into gravel and twist to the left.  Stay on the gravel though that twist and an actual curve to the left.  The cemetery will appear on your left. Private Wolf is about 30 yards north of the white cemetery directory box and on the east. \nPlease bring a mask as Covid-19 rules are in effect.

DESCRIPTION:The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War\, Department of Nebraska are having a grave dedication honoring Alfred Hendee\, the Last Union Civil War Soldier buried in Lancaster County\, Nebraska at Panama Cemetery in Panama. Hendee was a soldier in Co. H\, 128th Indiana Infantry and died Dec. 18\, 1945 at the age of 97. \nDirections: The Panama cemetery is a mile south of Panama on Olive Creek road and situated between 148th and 134rd streets on the north side of the road (a little less than ½ mile west of 148th  street. For most the easiest way is to get on Hwy 2 to the Bennet corner\, Hwy 43 or 162nd street\, and proceed south to Olive Creek and then west on a gravel Road.  Olive Creek Road is 1-mile south of Hwy 55D that leads into Panama. \nPlease bring a mask as Covid-19 rules are in effect.

DESCRIPTION:The SUVCW\, Department of Nebraska will hold its 2020 Department Encampment at the Saunders County Historical Museum in Wahoo\, Nebraska. The encampment is hosted by Shiloh Camp #2 of Lincoln. Due to COVID 19 there may be group restrictions still in place\, more information will follow regarding any limitations of attendance. We will also plan on providing the meeting online through Zoom\, details of which will come later. \nThe memorial service will begin at 9:15 am with the business meeting beginning at 10:00 am. \nMore information will be sent out via the Dept. SUMMARY:G.A.R. Observance of Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:Grand Army of the Republic Observance of Memorial Day – 152nd Anniversary \nMemorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan\, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic\, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May\, 1868\, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers\, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion\, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city\, village and hamlet churchyard in the land\,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day\, as he called it\, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

Will have wreath laying\, reading of Gen. Logan’s Order No. 11 by Shiloh Camp #2 Commander and firing of volleys by SVR honor guard. Also a brief ceremony to follow later at Victor Vifquain’s grave across the street at Calvary Cemetery. \nProper observance of social distancing and wearing face masks is appreciated.

Join us virtually on Monday\, May 25th\, for Nebraska’s largest Memorial Day observance with the fewest people present in the room. \nDuring our Memorial Day Observance live stream\, a candle will be lit by Gold Star Mother Monica Alexander at 8:00 a.m. and remain lit until 8:00 p.m. when it is extinguished by Gold Star Father Mel Alexander. Their son\, Army Corporal Matthew Alexander of Gretna\, was killed May 6\, 2007\, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Baqubah Iraq. DESCRIPTION:The Memorial Day Services held at Wyuka and Lincoln Memorial Park have been canceled. \nDue to the COVID-19 pandemic\, the annual Memorial Day Ceremony for the public normally held at the Veterans Memorial Garden in Antelope Park will be prerecorded and aired on Monday\, May 25. There will be no public observance event this year. The program will include a reading of the names of Lancaster County veterans who have died in the past year. The program will also take the place of the annual Bricks of Honor event that was scheduled for June 13 at the Veterans Memorial Garden. \nThe ceremony will air at 9 a.m.\, 11 a.m.\, and 7 p.m. on Memorial Day\, Monday\, May 25 on LNKTV\, the City’s government access channel at LNKTVcity.lincoln.ne.gov. It can be viewed on ALLO channel 2; Spectrum channel 1300; and Kinetic channel 1005. The ceremony will also be available at YouTube.com/LNKTVcity. It will also be shared on the Veterans Memorial Gardens Facebook page at Facebook.com/LNKVeteransGarden. \nThe event is presented by the Lincoln Memorial Day Observance Association in cooperation with the Veterans Memorial Garden Advisory Council. The Association also plans Memorial Day observances at Wyuka and Lincoln Memorial Park. Public Memorial Day events will not be held at those two venues this year. \nFor more information about the Veterans Memorial Garden\, visit parks.lincoln.ne.gov. \nIn lieu of community celebrations statewide\, the Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs will present an all-day salute to veterans Monday\, May 25.
