The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War hosts a special presentation and fundraising book sale Saturday, April 5, at the Fremont City Auditorium.
Historian David Wells of Omaha will present “April 1865: The end of the war, but did it bring peace?” at 1:45 pm. He will discuss events surrounding the last weeks of the Civil War and their implications on the future of our country, such as voting rights, economic growth, the transcontinental railroad, homesteading and settlement of the plains.
The public is welcome to this free event, which will be followed by a sale of discounted military reference books, movies and memorabilia until 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Proceeds will support SUVCW activities in Nebraska and the Dakotas.
The SUVCW is a fraternal organization dedicated to preserving the memory of the original Boys in Blue, who saved the Union in 1861-1865. Members and holding their annual statewide conference, known as the Department Encampment, in the morning of April 5.
The Department of Nebraska and the Dakotas has Camps based in Fremont, Omaha, Lincoln and Wisner. Membership is open to men ages 14 and older who had an ancestor who served in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines or Revenue Cutter Service during the Civil War. Men interested in American History but who do not share this lineage may join as an Associate Member, and boys ages 6-14 are welcome as Junior Members.
Visitors are encouraged to attend Saturday afternoon’s presentation and ask questions about genealogy, military history and SUVCW membership.
